Volcano eruption
As we all know there is an ongoing volcano eruption in Iceland. This has affected a large part of Europe, as the ash has dispersed over a vast area of the continent and has interrupted air traffic in many countries. The word is that some travelers have canceled their flights to Iceland this summer because of this and many others are thinking about it.
As paradoxical as it may seem, the eruption has affected Icelandic air traffic less than the rest of Europe; KeflavĂk airport is still open and domestic flights have not been interrupted. Rumor has it that in the whole country people were masks outside and that daily life has been greatly interrupted. The only area really affected is a part of the south-lowland, which is mainly farmland and deserts and is not densely populated. In that area people do have to wear masks outside, bright daylight turns into darkness of night, and there is a risk of an electrical shortage. But the main concern there is the live stock, not the people.
This is not a touristic eruption, it’s dangerous. But as long as you keep away from the affected area, you’ll be just fine. So please don’t let this tedious volcano destroy your vacation plans. Come to Iceland.
Here is a map of how the ash disperses over Europe. This has been taken from the web page of The Daily Telegraph. Read the article here.
